The irony of life is how it gives us things which help us grow, this book has had such amazing short stories with a beautiful two fold purpose, one of educating ourselves and two to show us the positive side of life. I am not sure how I am going to write everything I find important down in one summary that will definitely not suffice the knowledge it has shared with me, but I do hope personally it’ll help me remember these stories when I read this.
Readers Digest - Mind Power
Emotions & Health
Physicians have known that the mind could make the body ill. A common cluster called neuro-circulatory asthenia helps differentiate between physical illness and mental illness.
Mind evokes certain automatic responses for the body. Think about food and you salivate. Words or thoughts can prepare sexual organs for function, and cause a blush or goose flesh. But more serious effects can be wrought by emotion.
An emotional alarm had been created in a lady’s memory when she was away from her husband for a short time, and in time it was known that when she was younger her parents were killed while they were away and her first husband left her overnight. How her symptoms of anxiety disappeared? She was given tranquillizers for two weeks and was let to speak about her fears. Some people often only require counselling.
How can thought work such changes? There is a pathway between the Hypothalamus, the brain segment that controls primitive reactions to anger, fear, hunger, sex, and the pituitary gland. This mysterious land, a lump the size of a sugar cube located at the base of the brain, has long been known to secrete a growth hormone.
Sometimes when we face unexplained fatigue, lack of sex interest, loss of weight, constipation, hopelessness, feelings of uselessness, difficulty in making decisions and restlessness, sleep disturbance ( being one of the prime clues) it could be because of the sudden changes in our lives. Some times even susceptibility to smaller illnesses such as cold and cough could also be caused by little emotional stress.
All one needs in times of despair is a hope and an assurance that their ills can be treated.
Think Thin - Behavior controlling diet.
The use of thoughts as reward or punishment is enormously convenient if you can make it work, because thoughts are very strong factors in what happens in one’s body. However each person must find the technique that fits his own life and convenience and must use it in a formal and systematic way.
The thought of food now becomes a signal to eat and hunger can be triggered by a glance at the clock, a tv commercial, or even a feeling of anxiety.
A personal reference given by the author:
+I am confronted with a stimulus (a signal) - the corned beef.
+ The Stimulus initiates an automatic response - I start to reach for the corned beef.
+Instead of the corned beef, I take the salad a desired behavior.
+ Because the image of my fat father is disturbing, I shut It off by shouting “stop” in my mind. I must do this or else the punishing image will overlap with the desired behavior and perhaps stop that too.
+ Finally, a pleasant thought as a reward. I used a trip to Europe to use it as an action on the desired behavior.
The sooner the rewards are given the better they work.
+I move away from the corned beef as soon as possible.
Over time your body will learn this without you having to put in so much effort of reward and punishment.
The thing you need to learn is three things, conjuring up an unpleasant thought, then shouting “stop” in your mind and then conjuring up a pleasant thought.
I think also it’s important to think about the happy moments in your life, just like how in Harry Potter it is used to kill dementors, you can use it to tune your mind to fight against the strong negative energy in your mind.
Often habit often overrules plan. Focus on achieving a strong thought, keep a diary control and analyze your self and every time you broke your diet and why you did. Then the next time this happens you can prevent it from happening.
Behavior control is more powerful than any stimuli. Practice it.
Biofeedback : Mind Teaches Body To Heal Itself.
Biofeedback training is based on the premise that we can modify or gain control over a range of bodily functions once thought can be totally automatic. We all use natural forms of feedback for perfect skill For example, in learning to serve a tennis ball, we throw it in the air and hit it, and watch where it lands. If the ball sails 15 feet past the service line, we alter our next hit. Learning such a skill requires only making an effort, then seeing, hearing and feeling the results.
An asthma patient is asked to visualize flowers, trees, dust and what ever threatens him. As he reacts instinctively to the image, he starts to become anxious. Over several sessions of practicing and understanding oneself, the patient is able to stop his symptoms. Mind works magic. In time the patients learns to relax. Sometimes this requires an equipment to prove the progress to the human brain and hence the use of Biofeedback equipment.
